The technology exists to track an employee’s heart rate, core temperature, and fatigue
levels in real-time. While these Wearables can prevent heatstroke or falls, they raise
significant ‘Big Brother’ concerns. Where does safety monitoring end and privacy
invasion begin?
To implement wearables successfully, companies must adopt a ‘Data Sovereignty’ policy.
This means clarifying exactly who sees the data (typically just a safety officer, not a direct
supervisor) and ensuring the data is deleted after a set period unless an incident occurs.
Transparency is the only path to 100% adoption. Prove to the workforce that these tools
are used to send ‘Personal Heat Alerts’ for their protection, not to track their productivity
or bathroom breaks. When workers trust the tech, the tech can save their lives.
